our approach to sustainability

In order to scale sustainability, we need to rethink how products are made, as well as the impact of each material we use to create them. Our sustainable production process begins with the selection of 100% recycled raw materials to create fibers that are then spun into the yarns used to make our garments. In partnership with factories in Italy and Portugal, our pieces are ethically produced by craftspeople and finished by hand with great care. To complete our total adherence to responsible production of our clothing, we must ensure that the packaging used abides by our green ethos. Thus, we make certain that all packaging and shipping materials employed are of recycled or biodegradable origin.

RECYCLING

Today, only 1% of the garments produced yearly are recycled. If we properly recycled all clothing already produced on the planet, we would have enough material to produce new pieces for decades.

At PARADIS PERDUS we work with the leading recycled material suppliers in Italy (knitwear) and Spain (jersey).

Using only recycled fibers for our clothing has restricted us in terms of the number of raw materials available to make our garments. For instance, while conventional fashion brands have access to an average of 1,500 different qualities of yarns to create knitwear, we have developed around 10 different qualities that follow our strict standards. Through the hard work of our dedicated teams and a great amount of research and development, we have been able to produce fibers composed of 100% recycled materials that maintain the highest quality. The yarns are made from discarded sweaters that have been disassembled, divided by color, and spun into new fibers. These fibers are then used by the artisans at our partnered factories to create our signature knitwear designs in Italy and jersey pieces in Portugal. All made with love, and finished by hand.

PACKAGING

Thoughtfully packaged with eco-friendly shipping supplies, it is imperative that each product’s journey is aligned with our eco-conscious guidelines. At PARADIS PERDUS, not only are our garments made of 100% recycled materials, but we also remain transparent throughout the production process. Each aspect of our products is recycled, trim and packaging included: from the labels (brand labels, composition labels) to the hangtags (including string), to the shipping materials for garment delivery (the box, tissue paper, shipping labels) - 100% transparency is in our DNA.

In addition, the protective bags in which our garments are stored in transit from the factories to our warehouse are made up of a biodegradable substance. We have partnered with Maxim Fashion and their ingenious Aquapaks, which are made of an alcohol polymere that dissolves in water with no harm to nature. You won’t see them as they are removed during order preparation but you have the right to know! We collect all these bags at our fulfillment facility and send them back to our factories to be reused for the following seasons.

It is with true authenticity and with genuine care that we act through these transparent and sustainable values. We believe that through leading by example, we can make a fundamentally positive change across the entire supply chain, at every step – not only at PARADIS PERDUS, but also in the greater scheme of fashion and consumer culture.

CARBON COMPENSATED

We guarantee that our products are 100% carbon compensated. How so?

For every action, there is a reaction. Each action in a supply chain creates a gas emission. We have two approaches for PARADIS PERDUS:

Track the entire chain of production and use the most sustainable options along the way with renewable energies and the shortest distanced journeys for transporting fibers and materials.Keep track of our full carbon emissions and aim to compensate more every year.

Through the help of our partner, Carbonfund.org, we support three types of carbon offset projects; each plays an important role in the fight against climate change. The projects we support are third-party validated and verified to meet the highest standards:

At the present moment, energy efficiency projects reduce energy use, providing the most cost-effective ways to reduce carbon emissions and save individuals and businesses money. In order to fight deforestation, which accounts for 20% of global carbon emissions, we are engaged in forest conservation. This helps to remove CO2 from the air and into trees and soil, helping communities and wildlife.

3. Renewable energy - wind, solar, hydro, methane reductions - reduce carbon emissions today, spur investment in clean technologies and help create a low-carbon economy for tomorrow.

TRANSPARENCY

As a matter of principle, we stand strongly against greenwashing. Greenwashing can be understood as the intentional strategy of brands and companies to employ misleading marketing tactics to the public under the guise of standing for environmental justice. Often this takes the form of an extrapolation of a PR agenda to appear to be a green, eco-friendly company when in reality it is not.

We support authenticity, honesty and educating our community. We do not pretend to be perfect, as we are always learning and innovating to become more eco-conscious and responsible. At PARADIS PERDUS, we are working to change the world of fashion and our attitude toward sustainable production. We fully support our fellow fashion brands to make positive changes in their operations that are both healthy for their employees and the planet. We equally encourage our community to make responsible choices when it comes to consumption, and to demand transparency and ethical practices from any organization, no matter the industry.

We do not condone the practice of greenwashing, as this is misleading for the consumer (and at times for employees). Instead, we invite the companies that currently participate in greenwashing to practice honesty with the public, and work to make positive, eco-conscious changes in their operations while remaining humbled and transparent.
